One ladys junk is another ladys treasure!

So while the hubby was manning the gargage sale on Saturday, I did a little garage sale hunting of my own. I found some great buys, a Fiskars paper cutter for $5.00, some vintage doilies for my displays at shows, some very neat old books for 50 cents a piece, and the treasure of the day was finding a fabulous sewing box filled with vintage buttons, some old pinking shears, embroidery threads, old needles and pins, ribbons, colorful sewing thread on vintage wooden spools, and other odds and ends. It was like a little time capsule of vintage treasures!

I had a quick peak inside before I purchased it for $10.00, to be sure there were things that I actually wanted, but  the thrill was getting it home home and emptying it out to see what was in the treasure box!

There was an old prescription bottle that held pins and metal snaps, that was dated 1975, but some of the items were a lot older than that. There were a few buttons still attached to the cards that they were originally sold on, that had silly prices like 25, 39 & 12 cents! Now that has got to be pretty old!

What amazes me, is the fact that these old wooden thread spools were made so beautifully. Some of the older ones actually have the company name and thread info carved or engraved into the wood.

You wouldn't see that type of detail these days on something so mundane.

I sorted the buttons into color groupings...so pretty!

Some of the pins had been carefully stuck into small bits of foam, acting as little pin cushions. I couldn't help but wonder about the woman who had once owned this sewing kit, and what her life may have been like.  What a fun find! Pin It

What a crazy week it has been!
                           Daughter #2

-spent the last 10 days at our house, as she was preparing to move out to Vancouver Island, on the west coast.  We spent  a lot of mom and daughter time together last week, before she left. We had a nice shopping day in the city, and she came to  several of my workout classes with me.
We met up with       Daughter #1.....

..... last Wednesday, and went to a fashion show and dinner together, here in my town. We spent a lot of time gabbing, catching up and talking about the future. It was real nice chatting with my girls.

                          Daughter # 3

-turned 22 last Saturday. It was nice speaking with her on the phone on her birthday. She is in Prince George, B.C, with her boyfriend, and will be finishing up her engineering degree this December. I cannot believe how quick these children are growing up!

                       youngest child #4

My son, just managed to get his first part time job,  at one of the nicest restaurants in town! He is so excited about earning his own money!

                          My husband

-is almost finished organizing the garage, after spending about a month in there! He was fortunate to find a fellow who is opening up a shop and  has purchased most of his "collections"!
Our big garage sale is this Saturday.

...and me....I am still preparing for the Vintage Chicks Show, that is quickly approaching in a couple of weeks! I am excited...I love that show.

A Chick with a Power Tool

Last week, for Mothers Day, one of my daughters gave me a rotary tool kit.

So the past week has been spent learning new skills such as drilling, cutting and grinding metal.  This was one of the things that I had wanted to learn this year to take my jewelry to the next level. I am really enjoying it, and am now constantly on the search for things to drill holes in! I also learned how to rivet the drilled metal pieces to leather, and created these cuffs for the  upcoming Vintage Chicks Show.

Here is another cuff bracelet, created with an old crocheted doily, and a pretty fabric flower!

Two new skills learned this week! Pin It

I've got the music in me!

So did you guess what the focal piece is on this necklace?

It is a record adapter!

Remember, those little discs that you would insert into the large hole of a 45, so that you could play it on your stereo??  I used to have a lot of these but they were made of plastic. Well, this is a metal one. This brand is the first one made and marketed in the US. It was invented by Frank A. Jansen, the patent, #2585622, was applied for in 1949 and issued in 1952 then marketed by the Webster-Chicago Corporation. The reverse side reads “Patent Applied For".

The music beads are handmade out of old music sheets and then shellacked  with a high gloss finish. I also added some vintage  brass  beads and a few tiny Swarovskis for a little bit of bling! Pin It

New Creations

Today is all all about just looking at pictures!

This one is created from an old chauffeurs tag from British Columbia (1967), and lots of pretty vintage beads.

Does anyone know what the center object is on this  necklace?!

This one uses a vintage dog tag from 1974, a gorgeous Swarovski crystal and a vintage pearl.

Part of a  pretty rhinestone belt buckle,  and vintage chain and  beads are used in this piece.

Another very neat old dog tag (1959), and an old key are used in this  necklace.

Tuesday's Tidbits

It's been as crazy week, here at home. Furniture coming and going, preparing for a show and a garage sale....whew I am exhausted!

I managed to sell all the furniture items I had advertised last week, and everyone who eventually came to pick up the items, did not even bother to bargain with me! Wow...after all the crazy offers I was getting in emails, I was super surprised that when the serious buyers showed up and paid full price!

One of the sets of furniture that we sold was my teenage sons bedroom furniture....the stuff he had had since he was a toddler. He had out grown the single bed years ago, but we finally got around to selling it. it was kind of sad to see it go.

The outdoor market that I had been so busily preparing for, was snowed out! Yes...I awoke early Saturday morning to falling snow! What a shame, the organizers and participants had worked so hard to create this event.

When one door shuts, they say another door opens.
While in my town Saturday, picking out movies to rent, (due to the fact that it had snowed and I was unable to go to the market as previously scheduled), my son and I noticed a new shop that had just opened, so we popped in. Turns out that the woman who owns it, is someone who I know from doing the local Christmas shows. She loves my jewelry, and offered me some retail space for rent in her new shop that features local and Canadian artisans. It was a good deal, so yesterday I set up my little Hot Rocks space in her shop....I have to get some photos.

My new coffee table from Restoration Hardware arrived last week, and oh, how I love this table. I like to go and sit on the couch and just look at it.

My husband is still cleaning out all his stuff in the garage, preparing for a community garage sale in a couple of weeks. It is like an episode of Hoarders in there. I am staying well clear of the garage until he is done.

Yesterday it was 26C or around 80F for my American friends, and today will be about 75F...go figure...snow one day, hot the next. I sat outside on my patio furniture yesterday, trying to avoid a wet rear end from sitting on soggy cushions while trying to get a tan!

I have lots of blogs to catch up on, so plan on relaxing a bit and visiting all my blog pals today.

Tueday Tidbits

-On the weekend we listed some furniture for sale on Kijiji. I cannot believe the email responses that one gets from posting an ad online. One item that I have listed is an antique 1903 dresser, that I listed for $100.00. Within hours, I  had 3 people offer me  $ 60.00, and one offer me $50.00! I mean I will deal, but come on people...isn't that a bit cheap? The other item I have listed is my old coffee table, all the info, measurements etc. are in the ad...one guy just emailed me to asked me the dimensions! Good grief people..READ the ad! I can see this is going to be a fun week already!

-  On Saturday, I am participating in an outdoor market, in a town nearby. So I busy preparing for that. Set ups at outside markets are different from inside shows, as one has to consider weather and wind.

-Last Satuday night, my husband and I attended a concert at our community center. The band "Chilliwack" was performing. They are a great Canadian  rock band from Vancouver, and had many hits in the 70's and 80's. We were up dancing and singing, it was a rockin' good time! However....you know you are getting old, when you look around and everyone at the concert is old!

-The last few days here have been cool and rainy. My patio furniture, that I put out about 10 days ago is just getting wet.

That's it this week! I must get to work on finishing all the preparations for Saturdays show!
